Dennis Osadebe- The Artist.

Dennis Osadebe doesn’t say too much on a normal day. He’s pretty laid back, smart and clearly loves to express himself through his art. He went to university in the UK and works in Lagos. He is inspired by Basquait(who deserves a whole post on his own) and that says a lot about his art. Here’s a brief interview with an artist I adore:

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF?

A lot of my friends describe me as laid back, passionate & charming. I’ll like to believe I’m all of this + awesome lol.

DOES THE WAY YOU SEE YOURSELF REFLECT IN YOUR ART?

Definitely, my art in its entirety is an expression of my inner self. I believe that is what is most important to an artist. That he/she is honest with themselves and express what they feel on a medium. My art is a pure reflection of myself because I feel it has that new moral fury about it, this trying out something new, that breaking all conventional ways to doing things and doing your own thing and I have the silouettes there to give it humanism, so that everyone can relate with it. That’s me and that is my art.

WHY DOES BASQUIAT INSPIRE YOU?

Basquiat was a rockstar, his story is amazing, his works powerful. To me he was an on-the-nose embodiment of his era and that is what I want to be to my era.

WHEN YOUR WORK IS FEATURED AT EXHIBITIONS, DO YOU GO? HOW DOES IT FEEL?

Of course, I love to hear people out, see the connection they have with my art, how it makes them feel also interacting with them is always fun. I love meeting people at galleries because the conversations are always so good. I mean i don’t think it is a feeling that can be explained, it’s just always an honour for me to have the space and for people to come and get lost in that space.

DO YOUR PARENTS SUPPORT YOUR ART?

My parents are 100% supportive.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE AN ARTIST IN LAGOS?

Being an artist in lagos is interesting, there is a lot of energy in the city.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING AN ARTIST?

It gives me the freedom to fully express myself. I love what I’m doing, I love to paint and I love drinking good wine.
